My Secret of Life!

I agree with Masanobu Fukuoka who said in his book The One Straw Revolution that

Living is no more than the result of being born.

This is my secret. There is no “reason” for life or particular purpose except to live life as close to nature as possible and enjoy.  But I take a journey here on this blog with the purpose of clarifying some information that is on the Internet from a popular actor, Jim Carrey who has a different secret of life from mine. He made a video called Jim Carrey’s Secret of Life –Inspiring Message which was posted by TJOP, The Journey of Purpose.  It inspired me alright, but probably not as he intended.

Other information below is taken from Jim Carrey’s Commencement Address at the 2014 Maharishi University of Management Graduation (“MUM speech”) which is where the video content came from.

As a by the way, from the MUM website, their founding goals are:
  • To develop the full potential of the individual (preferably the potential as a money maker and contributor to the development of the New World Order?)
  • To realize the highest ideal of education (brain washing)
  • To improve governmental achievements (technology)
  • To solve the age-old problem of crime and all behavior that brings unhappiness to our world family (Improve Control in the New World Order)
  • To bring fulfillment to the economic aspirations of individuals and society (based on the current monetary system that is so unjust and unfair)
  • To maximize the intelligent use of the environment (In whose view? Monsanto does this in their view.)
  • To achieve the spiritual goals of humanity in this generation (What? Spiritual Goals?)

Also MUM is a vegetarian university.  Jim is listed online as a vegan, although this seems to be a new thing with him (since last year).  My view is that a vegetarian (but especially vegan) diet is risky to health, especially for the brain if there are no animal fats included.

Now for a critical review of the video.  Italicised words are from the video with my comments after and the grey text below is from Carrey’s MUM speech.

My soul is not contained in the limits of my body, my body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul.

His soul?  The energy that this idea of soul comes from is immutable (unknowable) by us except in a body.  He is not talking about “soul” here, but about his body, which is limited.

I’ve often said that I wish people could realize all their dreams and wealth and fame so that they could see that it’s not where you’re going to find your sense of completion

This is big of him to say when he has realized his dreams and wealth and fame and not every one can do this because it's not how the pyramidal system works.

I can tell you that the effect you have on others is the most important valuable currency there is

He would say this as an actor, but meanwhile he’s paid lots of cash too.  He’s had two failed marriages and is still unmarried (not a good effect).  And talk about visualising an important effect. He stated that he placed a dummy check in his pocket while visualizing a $10,000,000 check being given to him for acting services rendered and seven years later received a check for $10,000,000 for his role in Dumb and Dumber (see Wiki).

How will you serve the world?

Because everything you gain in life will rot and fall apart

Knowledge will not rot and fall apart.

And all that will be left of you is what was in your heart

Some old skeletons and mummies (no pun intended with MUM) would disagree with this.

Within each of us there is a silence as vast as the universe and when we experience that silence, we remember who we are. (Gunilla Norris, Author of Inviting Silence, Universal principles of Meditation)

I have to ask, why does everything today have to be universal?

We’re not avatars we create we’re not pictures on the film stock

This shows his difficulty with being an actor, which seems to be a common problem and why a lot of them use drugs, are alcoholics, have failed marriages, etc, etc.

What is the image at 59 seconds into the video?  A dark figure. But he says,

We are the light that shines through.  All else is just smoke and mirrors distracting but not truly compelling

Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory.

Invisible in what world?  I’m not invisible in my world and I don’t consider it a risk that I can see myself in all my glory (and anyone else who cares to do so)!

“There is no reality except the one contained within us.” (Hermann Hesse)

And, an actor’s “job” in the modern film industry is to mold that reality... the reality in our minds.

Our eyes are not viewers, they’re also projectors that are running a second story over the picture

The picture, as in his films?  The reality created by the film industry and other mass media techniques?  Is this a statement of fear that we might critique “the picture” and make our own?!  Or better yet, ignore it.

That we see in front of us all the time.

What does this mean?  That we are being bombarded by an imposed reality, all the time?  I think he’s got a point here.

fear is writing that script

This is kind of him to let us know.

Now fear is going to be a player in your life

What? What?

you get to decide how much

Is he sure?

you could spend your whole life imagining ghosts

In the book Programs of the Brain, J.Z. Young mentions how one view is that we are skeletons with a ghost.  He also states that

“Of course most of the aims will be determined by the cultural influences impinged in him by the society in which he has been reared.”

Aims being the same as purpose.

worrying about the pathway to the future

I don’t worry about it, but I do like to make my own choices.

but all there will ever be is what’s happening in the decisions we make in this moment which are based on either love or fear

Decisions, decisions, or choices?  Freedom to make our own based on knowledge as well as all our emotions, including love and fear, not love or fear!  That’s a true democracy.

so many of us chose our path out of fear disguised as practicality

Practically speaking, I choose to disagree with him.

what we really want seems impossibly out of reach

What I really want, I already have. Life.  No thanks to him.

and ridiculous to expect so we never dared to ask the universe for it

Rubbish.  Lots of people pray to God and have been for centuries.  “the universe” is just another name for God.  He even referred to this in the MUM speech with an example of him praying to God for a bicycle when he was a child.

I’m saying that you can ask the universe for it

That’s so kind of him ... but who is he to say this besides a multi-millionaire actor.  According to Celebrity Networth his networth is $150 million.  This is a lot, but it does not give him authority to advise us to ask the universe for what we want.  Maybe I should ask him with all his money, um ... for a small holding!

Life doesn’t happen to you.  It happens for you.

But in his MUM speech he further says about this:

I really don’t know if that’s true. I’m just making a conscious choice to perceive challenges as something beneficial so that I can deal with them in the most productive way. You’ll come up with your own style, that’s part of the fun!

As far as I can tell it’s just about letting the universe know what you want

As far as he can tell isn't very far.  I think he would have let a few people know what he wanted as well.

And working toward it while letting go of how it comes to pass

I agree with this!  It’s a good thing not to be a control freak!

Why not take a chance on faith not religion but faith not hope but faith.  I don’t believe in hope.  Hope is the beggar.  Hope walks through the fire and faith leaps over it.

I hope he wakes up.

You are ready and able to do beautiful things in this world

Of course he is addressing the MUM speech to people who have talents and capabilities.  But the video could be viewed by anyone.  When making this statement, he is certainly not considering the folk I work with who have severe disabilities, severe injuries (e.g., in a vegetative state), dementia, severe degenerative diseases (e.g., MS, Huntington's Disease), and the many statistics of people with these conditions and even less severe ones and the steady growth of the incidents of disease and decrease in mental capabilities.

And after you walk through those doors today, you’ll only ever have two choices.  Love or fear

Fukuoka commented in his book The One Straw Revolution that nature has countless variations.  Biodiversity used to have countless variations, but these are dwindling even as I write.  Dwindling down to two choices?  Life as B’org or death?  Computers are binary in this way.  Love B’org or fear death.  Luckily I'm a human and still think there are countless other choices, including loving death and fearing the B’org!

Choose love

Yes, choose love over hate perhaps.  But is hate fear?  Not exactly.

And don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful heart.

Playful heart?  I believe life is about having fun, but a heartfelt belief is more than a game that fear could dismantle.

A simplified chart as this can be dangerous and confusing.  The items in the fear column could actually be caused by consumption of coffee with sugar. But also, cortisol has a relaxing effect during fasting and produces other benefits.   As for oxytocin, it is not all that this list implies either.  Research studies have shown that oxytocin can actually increase the fear response in people and animals.   And then, what about the many other emotions, such as anger, disgust, depression, boredom, sadness, surprise, etc, etc?

In addition, fear is an important part of life.  As stated by Young in Programs of the Brain, it alerts us to threats to our security and enables us to deal with them.  However, to have excessive terrors and unreal fears is to be schizophrenic.  Granted, some say that we are all a bit schizophrenic (see my book review on Madness and Civilization, A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason (1961) by Michel Foucault).  One of the problems today seems to be knowing what is a real threat to our security and a bogus one.  Another problem is an innate tendency for humans to obey authority even to the point of harming themselves and others.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)

The above quote from the Bible implies that God will take care of us so we don’t need to use our instincts such as fear.  We used to fear God though.  Now many believe that it’s the Universe that will protect/comfort us and we do not need fear anymore.  But unfortunately, it’s actually the Elite who are in power on Earth and pulling the strings, and they are not protecting us, but destroying us and destroying nature. This is scary and worth appropriate fear reactions.

On the other hand, we need to be careful about what and who we love too.  For example, loving the devil may make one rich and give them the benefits as set-out in the love column above, but I think most readers would agree that this is not particularly wise because the devil is evil and evil is bad.  Isn’t it?

I fear not knowing the difference between right and wrong, love and hate, and good and bad.  I love my ability to fear that which can harm me.  I fear not being able to love.  Without love and fear and our other emotions, humanity may evolve into controlled mechanical beings such as the Borg/robots.  However, being a part of the B’org (big organisations, corporations) is close to this already.  No matter what members of a board of directors feel, corporations have no feelings yet they are legal persons.

In other words, without fear, there is no love, and without love, there is no fear.  To say chose one over the other is nonsense.  To say one is bad and the other good is like saying one side of the brain is good and the other bad or one type of cholesterol is good and the other bad.  Love and fear are part of one, our emotions.  To be fully alive, we need all our emotions as well as both parts of our brains AND both types of cholesterol.  I can think of many instances where people are letting go of their fears in the name of love, but who are in reality giving up their power to an artificial authority, but I will only give one recent example to conclude.

Fear has been created about terrorism on a global level.  9/11 was a big part in this.  9/11 was not as it was portrayed though and many have given evidence to show this which I wrote about on this blog (911 B’org Emergency and 9/11 and Counting).  The consequence for Americans and the English was new legislation (the Patriot Act and the Terrorism Act respectively) that diminished democratic rights.  The excuse is to protect us and to alleviate our fears (that were concocted in the first place).  The result is less love of our neighbours in the world and even ourselves as we are subjected to inhumane treatments such as loss of privacy and senseless wars. This is all about money and power/control - love of money and love of power/control and fear of losing them.  My secret then is that we can live close to nature without money and without being controlled by the constructed pyramidal power reality by using our minds, instincts and emotions such as love and fear to protect us as we were designed to do.  I am working on visualising that on a piece of paper and putting it in my pocket!  That would be priceless!!!

Photo of Jim Carrey at MUM with thanks.  I note this is not one of his favourites!  I’m not surprised by this considering he does look a little like our so-called evolutionary ancestors in a clown suit.
